The biggest upset in the UFC title history was back in April 7, 2007. Georges St-Pierre was then a crowd favorite, with having a record of 7:1. The whole MMA industry had their first ever biggest upset when he lost to mixed martial arts fighter Matt Serra during UFC 69.
This time around, crowd favorite and UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey might be on the verge of having a record of 18:1 in this upcoming epic fight.
As an amateur, Ronda Rousey has successfully won her three fights for just a total of 104 seconds all in all. She was also an Olympic medalist in Judo. Now that she is a pro, Rousey has a record of 11-0, winning 8 of them in less than a minute and 10 of them in the first round. The last two fights that Rousey won even lasted for only a total of 30 seconds.
The world has never seen something like this happen.
There’s no telling how each fight would end in MMA because there can be a lot of surprises. Even if looks like the fighter you are betting on is going to win the bout, circumstances can change in a bat of an eye. This is why in a recent interview, UFC color commentator and former contender Kenny Florian talked about the chances of Correia winning the fight unexpectedly.
Florian said that if Correia wins, this would be the biggest upset in UFC history. “When you look at what Ronda has done, her skill level and [experience] compared to what Bethe has, or what we think she has, yeah, it would absolutely be the biggest upset,” he continued. In this coming fight, Florian thinks the world is going to watch how Rousey dominate the octagon. The fans are going to tune in to witness the destruction.
The UFC color commentator went on saying that it is not about if Rousey will win the fight, it is the manner of how she will defend her title. “It’s kind of like Usain Bolt. Even when you knew he was going to win the race, it was just how fast he was going to run the race. That’s kind of what you’re looking for here with Ronda, the manner in which she’s going to do it,” he explained.
For Correia to win over Ronda, Florian said that it should be a multi-pronged approach. “Everyone says you’ve got to avoid the clinch, but it goes beyond that. You have to be able to be an excellent striker, one that is very confident with distance control,” he said. Florian further explained that there are factors that should be taken into consideration when fighting someone like Rousey. “You have to fully understand distance control and utilize lateral movement and break out of the clinch properly. Be able to know where to put your hands and where you are vulnerable. You have to have a greater understand of judo, of wrestling, of jiu-jitsu,” he said. Aside from this, Florian said that Rousey’s opponent should know how to kick her, since this aspect is not really the highlight of how the MMA champion plays her game. Fighters have a hard time finishing Rousey because they cannot keep up with her speed and counter her blows.
When asked about what Florian thinks on Correia’s fighting abilities, he said, “I don’t think there’s one aspect of her game that she does better than Ronda.”.
